Why Visit Yunnan?
Located in southwest China, Yunnan Province is one of the country’s most diverse and beautiful destinations. Bordering Tibet, Myanmar, Laos, and Vietnam, Yunnan has been shaped by centuries of cultural exchange and remains home to more than twenty ethnic minority groups.
Unlike China’s large metropolitan areas, Yunnan offers a slower pace of life, spectacular mountain scenery, ancient towns, and some of the country’s best trekking opportunities.
Towering Himalayan peaks, deep river gorges, traditional Tibetan villages, peaceful rice terraces, and UNESCO-listed old towns all come together to create one of Asia’s most rewarding travel destinations.
For outdoor enthusiasts, Yunnan is home to several of China’s most famous hiking trails, including Tiger Leaping Gorge and the remote Yubeng Village Trek, both featured in this itinerary.
If you’re looking for an authentic China experience away from crowded tourist destinations, Yunnan is the perfect place to start.

- Carved by the powerful Jinsha River, the gorge stretches for approximately 16 kilometres between the towering Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Haba Snow Mountain, with cliffs rising more than 3,000 metres above the river below.
- Our hike follows the famous High Trail, offering breathtaking viewpoints almost every hour.
- We’ll gradually climb through terraced farmland, forests and mountain villages before reaching one of the area’s traditional guesthouses, where we’ll spend the night surrounded by incredible scenery.
- The pace is relaxed, with plenty of opportunities to rest, take photographs and simply enjoy the views.

Why Tiger Leaping Gorge Is One of China’s Best Treks
Tiger Leaping Gorge is widely regarded as one of the finest multi-day hikes in China.
Unlike many famous trekking routes that require technical climbing skills, this trail is accessible to anyone with a reasonable level of fitness while still offering spectacular alpine scenery.
Throughout the hike you’ll walk past waterfalls, dramatic cliffs, small farms and peaceful mountain villages, all with constant views over one of the deepest river gorges in the world.
For many travellers, this becomes the highlight of their entire trip to China.
Day 6 – Tiger Leaping Gorge Trek (Day 2) – Shangri-La
- We continue our hike through the final section of Tiger Leaping Gorge before reaching the lower part of the canyon.
- Today’s trail is shorter but equally rewarding, with several panoramic viewpoints overlooking the roaring Jinsha River far below.
- After completing the trek, we’ll continue by private vehicle towards Shangri-La, one of the most fascinating destinations in southwest China.
- Located on the Tibetan Plateau at an altitude of over 3,200 metres, Shangri-La offers a completely different atmosphere from the rest of Yunnan.
- Prayer flags flutter in the wind, Buddhist monasteries dominate the skyline, and Tibetan culture is present in every aspect of daily life.
- After checking into our hotel, you’ll have time to explore the old town at your own pace.
- Highlights
- Complete Tiger Leaping Gorge Trek
- Scenic drive through northwest Yunnan
- Arrival in Shangri-La
- Tibetan old town

Discover the Tibetan Side of Yunnan
Although many visitors associate Tibet only with the Tibet Autonomous Region, northern Yunnan is also home to large Tibetan communities.
Shangri-La offers an excellent introduction to Tibetan culture without requiring additional travel permits.
Here you’ll encounter colourful monasteries, prayer wheels, traditional wooden houses and a way of life that has remained largely unchanged for centuries.
Day 7 – Shangri-La to Feilaisi (Deqin)
- Today’s journey takes us through some of the highest mountain landscapes in Yunnan.
- As we drive north towards Feilaisi, we’ll cross spectacular mountain passes, deep valleys and remote Tibetan villages rarely visited by international tourists.
- The highlight of the day is arriving at Feilaisi, the best viewpoint for Meili Snow Mountain, one of the most sacred mountain ranges in Tibetan Buddhism.
- If weather conditions are favourable, we’ll witness the breathtaking sight of the setting sun illuminating the snow-covered peaks in shades of gold and orange.
- On clear mornings, the famous “Golden Summit” phenomenon transforms the mountains into one of China’s most unforgettable natural spectacles.
- We’ll spend the night in Feilaisi, preparing for tomorrow’s trek into the hidden valley of Yubeng.
- Highlights
- Scenic mountain drive
- Tibetan villages
- Meili Snow Mountain
- Feilaisi viewpoint
- Sunset over Kawagarbo Peak
Meili Snow Mountain: One of China’s Most Sacred Landscapes
Rising to 6,740 metres, Kawagarbo Peak is the highest mountain in Yunnan and one of Tibetan Buddhism’s most sacred peaks.
Unlike many famous mountains around the world, Kawagarbo has never officially been climbed. Local traditions consider the mountain sacred, and climbing it is prohibited out of respect for Tibetan beliefs.
Every year thousands of Tibetan pilgrims complete long journeys to circle the mountain on foot, following ancient pilgrimage routes that have existed for centuries.
During this tour you’ll experience these remarkable landscapes while learning about the spiritual importance they continue to hold for local communities.
Day 8 – Trek to Yubeng Village
- Today is one of the most exciting days of the entire journey.
- After breakfast in Feilaisi, we’ll continue towards Yubeng Village, a remote Tibetan settlement hidden deep in the mountains beneath the sacred peaks of Meili Snow Mountain.
- Yubeng has no road connection to the outside world. Until relatively recently, the village could only be reached on foot or by mule, helping preserve its remote character and traditional way of life.
- We’ll begin our trek towards the village, following an ancient mountain trail through forests and high-altitude landscapes.
- As we climb, the views become increasingly impressive. Snow-covered peaks, deep valleys and dense alpine forests surround the trail.
- After several hours of hiking, we’ll finally reach Yubeng, where we’ll spend the night in a traditional local guesthouse.
- The feeling of arriving in the village after the trek is one of the highlights of the entire trip.
- Highlights
- Yubeng trekking
- Remote Tibetan village
- Alpine forests
- Meili Snow Mountain scenery
- Traditional guesthouse
- Authentic Tibetan culture
Day 9 – Yubeng Village Trek
- Today we’ll explore the spectacular surroundings of Yubeng on foot.
- There are several hiking routes in the area, and the exact itinerary will depend on weather conditions and the group’s fitness level.
- The landscape around Yubeng is extraordinary. Ancient forests, glaciers, waterfalls, alpine meadows and snow-covered mountains create an environment that feels far removed from modern China.
- We’ll spend the day hiking through this spectacular scenery, with time to stop for photographs and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the valley.
- Yubeng is also an important pilgrimage destination for Tibetan Buddhists, and you’ll see prayer flags, mani stones and other signs of the area’s spiritual importance throughout the route.
- After the hike, we’ll return to the village for another night surrounded by mountains.
- Highlights
- Full-day Yubeng hiking
- Tibetan pilgrimage routes
- Waterfalls and alpine scenery
- Meili Snow Mountain views
- Traditional Tibetan village life
Yubeng: One of China’s Hidden Treasures
For many travellers, Yubeng is the highlight of the entire Yunnan trekking tour.
Hidden beneath the sacred Meili Snow Mountains, this tiny Tibetan village feels worlds away from China’s busy cities.
There are no large hotels, shopping centres or busy roads. Instead, you’ll find traditional houses, prayer flags, mountain trails and local families who have lived in the valley for generations.
The combination of spectacular scenery and Tibetan culture makes Yubeng one of the most memorable hiking destinations in China.
Day 10 – Yubeng to Shangri-La
- After breakfast, we’ll leave Yubeng and begin our journey back through the mountains.
- Depending on the group’s condition and weather, we’ll complete the final section of the route before meeting our private vehicle.
- From there, we’ll travel back towards Shangri-La, enjoying the spectacular scenery of northern Yunnan along the way.
- After arriving in Shangri-La, you’ll have some free time to relax after several days of trekking or explore more of the town.
- You may want to visit the historic Tibetan old town, walk around the local streets or simply enjoy a traditional Tibetan meal.
- Tonight is our final night together in the mountains.
- Highlights
- Final Yubeng trekking section
- Scenic mountain drive
- Return to Shangri-La
- Tibetan culture
- Free time to relax
Day 11 – Final Transfer & End of the Journey
- Today marks the end of our 11-day Yunnan trekking adventure.
- After breakfast, we’ll arrange your final transfer according to your travel plans.
- Depending on your onward journey, you can continue exploring Yunnan, travel to another destination in China or take a flight home.
- Although the tour officially ends today, we’ll be happy to help you plan your next destination in China if needed.

Information You Should Know Before Traveling to Yunnan
Planning a trekking trip to Yunnan is easier when you know what to expect. Here are some practical details to help you prepare for your journey.
Best Time to Visit Yunnan
Yunnan can be visited throughout most of the year, but the best time for this trekking itinerary is generally from March to November.
- Spring – March to May
- Spring brings mild temperatures, green landscapes and colourful flowers. It’s an excellent time for hiking, although mountain weather can still change quickly.
- Summer – June to August
- Summer offers lush green scenery and pleasant temperatures at higher elevations. However, this is also the rainy season, so afternoon showers are possible.
- Autumn – September to November
- Autumn is one of the best seasons for trekking in Yunnan. The weather is generally more stable, skies are often clear and visibility around the mountains can be excellent.
- Winter – December to February
- Winter can be cold, particularly around Shangri-La, Feilaisi and Yubeng. However, the snow-covered mountains can look spectacular during this period.
Is There a Risk of Altitude Sickness?
Some parts of this itinerary take place at high altitude, particularly around Shangri-La, Feilaisi and Yubeng.
The itinerary is designed to allow your body to gradually adapt to the increasing altitude. However, altitude sickness can affect anyone, regardless of age or fitness level.
Common symptoms can include headaches, tiredness, dizziness or shortness of breath.
We recommend taking the first few days at a comfortable pace, staying hydrated and avoiding excessive alcohol during the first days at altitude.
If you experience significant symptoms, always inform your guide immediately so that the appropriate measures can be taken.
What to Pack for a Yunnan Trekking Tour
You don’t need a huge amount of equipment for this trip, but comfortable and suitable clothing is important.

Internet and Payments in China
China has a different digital environment from most Western countries, so it’s worth preparing before your trip.
Most businesses in China accept Alipay or WeChat Pay, and these are now the easiest ways to pay for everyday expenses.
We also recommend having an eSIM or suitable mobile data solution so you can stay connected during your journey.
Some international websites and applications may not be directly accessible from mainland China. Depending on the services you need, you may want to arrange a VPN before arriving.
