By the way, the weather in Yunnan is very pleasant at the moment. It’s neither too cold nor too hot, making it an ideal place to live.

Sure! I spent four years studying Chinese in Kunming (one year at Yunnan University and two years at a private academy) followed by another year in Xiamen, studying at Jimei University. I wish you the best of luck in your new adventure, and who knows, maybe we’ll meet in Kunming! Haha. Let me know if you need any help.

I thought it was very weird the comments made by that person on Reddit (or Quora – not sure anymore). It was a discussion about universities, specific to Yunnan University, and I, along with others, were very surprised by that. I am glad that you clarified it (and having been an international student yourself, you can personally attest). I do agree about a student being asked to attend class or maintain a certain performance to keep the visa. That would make sense. Otherwise, it was very strange the comment made by that person. May I ask where you learned Chinese during those 4 years.

Hello Stella, thank you for reaching out to me.
I have lived in China for 7 years—4 years with a student visa and 3 years with a work visa—and I have never had any issues traveling around China. Last August 2024, I was there on a trip, and I also had no problems moving from one province to another. So, I’m not sure where you might have read that, but it is completely false.

The only thing that might resemble what you mentioned is that if you are granted a student visa, you are required to attend classes. If you don’t attend, they might sometimes check and cancel your visa if they see that you’re not going to class. However, during vacations, you are free to go wherever you want.
If you want to be absolutely sure, you can always ask the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in your country. If you need help contacting the school or anything else, feel free to message me privately.

While doing that, I read something on a REDDIT or Quora forum, and it kinda “freaked” me out. Obviously, this would not have applied to you, or even your friends if you were not in China under a student visa…..But here’s the thing…..I read that as an international student (which I will be), you cannot travel freely, even within China without obtaining someone’s permission (maybe the university, who is applying the local or some other agency’s regulation).

It is even more so for travels outside of China. I want to come to China to learn Chinese but also do some traveling traveling maybe to Thai…..If any of that is true, then that alone kills my plan for China.

If you do not know, I will simply put it up on a discussion forum.

Thanks!
